It does take awhile to set and it expands quite a bit. It is quite messy. White glue or wood glue is a very strong glue for wood. The wood will break somewhere else before the glued joint will. just depends on what you are trying to adhere. Liquid nails and gorilla glue are comperable, drying time and expansion (gorilla glue really puffs up if you don't clamp tightly) of the glue varies. They bond more stuff together. Wood glue is used to bond wood to wood.
Liquid nails is mainly used for construction. Gorilla glue will give you a tremendous bond. Wood glue is for light duty bonding of wood only.
