When installing baseboards is it necessary to glue as well as nail or can you just nail the boards?

I have just nailed the boards on good and tight, someone has told me to remove and glue to wall then re nail otherwise the board may move when carpet is laid !!! I wouldn't bother gluing. The nails will hold just fine. Besides, If you ever need to remove it for any reason, the glue will rip the drywall. You should be just fine.When installing baseboards is it necessary to glue as well as nail or can you just nail the boards?
It's not necessary to glue the baseboards, however, if the wall is hollow then some gluing is OK
never used glue here....
We nailed ours, and put a this line of paintable caulk across the top b/c we had wavy walls.


But, no - didn't glue them at all
Nails alone are fine. Gluing will complicate removal in the future if needed.
Either method can be used but, both together is not necessary. Some folks prefer the glue method because it is often hard to locate the studs to nail the baseboard to. If you get that little devise called a 'stud-finder' you can locate the stud and nail it there.
Nailing is just fine. Worked for centuries. Glue only the smallest pieces of molding to prevent splitting.
nails will work well alone no need for glue
No glue is needed except in a case where the piece of base is so small that you can't get in there. Glue is only used in commercial work on vinyl base.





The carpet goes on the tack strip and has nothing to do with the base. Here is a link to some good baseboard advise.
