I think D has it right. If it is painted or finished, sandpaper will remove the finish. That being said, check that the glue remover won't remove the finish either. I usually check on an unseen part of the desk or furniture, just to be sure nothing bad will happen. I usually pull out a drawer and find a place that isn't seen, and try it there.
